George Wellman and Veronica Moeller were married on June 12, 1918. They are Walt’s great uncle and aunt.

George Gerhard Wellman was born August 8, 1888 to Gerhard and Catherine Kruempelmann Wellman. He was the second of 6 children born to the couple. His sister, Elizabeth was Walt’s grandmother. I’ve written a few posts about her, including this one.

George, like his father, was a farmer. He registered for the draft in WWI on June 5, 1917. I found his draft card in the records.

He is listed as medium height, medium weight with gray eyes and dark hair on the back of the card.

It is interesting to look at the various files like this since you might find other family or neighbors just a few cards away from the person you looked up.

Veronica Moeller was born to Theodore and Elizabeth Fritzjunker Moeller in St. Paul, Iowa on April 4, 1899. She was their eldest child, the first of twelve. Their family also had a farm near West Point. I wrote more about Verona, as she was known, in this post.

Marriage

George and Verona were married on June 12, 1918 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in West Point. Father Groethe was the officiant. Witnesses were Anthony Wellman, brother of the groom, and Cecelia Moeller, sister of the bride.

George 1910s

George and Verona Wellman lived in Franklin Township in Lee County, Iowa. Their farm was close to the farm where George grew up. Georgie mentions George and Verona several times in her memoirs. That series of posts starts here.

Verona in 1932

By 1920, their first son, Walter, was born. I wrote about him in this post. They went on to have five more children. You can find them all listed in the 1940 census, ranging from Walter at 20 to Norbert at 1! George is listed as having a 5th grade education while Verona has an 8th grade education.

George around 1950.

George died February 27, 1956. Verona died February 9, 1996. They are buried in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.
