Walter Wellman was born April 25, 1919 to George and Veronica (Moeller) Wellman. He was Georgie’s cousin.

Walter Wellman served in the 212th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) in World War II. His unit served in Washington, DC, Norfolk, Virginia, and at Paine Field in Seattle, Washington. 

The Coast Artillery was part of the army, with the mission of using heavy artillery, either in coastal emplacements or mounted on railway cars, to provide protection of America’s port cities.

Walter died in an automobile accident while home on leave October 05, 1942.

Digging Deeper: More about the 212th Coast Artillery

The 212th was originally organized in 1847 as a regiment of the New York State Militia. Members of this group served in the American Civil War, served in Cuba, on the Mexican border, and in France in WWI. They were reorganized in 1921 as anti-aircraft artillery and in 1924 as coast artillery.
