John Bernard Lohman and Mary Fullenkamp were married on April 25, 1911 in West Point, Iowa. Barney and Mary Lohman’s nephew Herman Lohman married Germaine Wellman, Walt’s 1st cousin once removed.

John Bernard Lohman was born on January 24, 1874 to August and Clara Holfoester Lohman in Houghton, Iowa. He was the 6th child born to the couple. The family had a farm in Lee County, Iowa. Barney, as he was known, remained living with family for many years. In the 1910 census, we find him living with brother Herman and his family on the farm. Both Clara and August were deceased by this time.

Mary Fullencamp was born on August 16, 1874 to Henry and Elizabeth Holtkamp Fullenkamp. She was the second of 5 children born to the family. The family had a farm in Lee County. In 1884, Henry and two of the children all died, leaving Lizzie with three children aged 12, 1o and 5.

Marriage

On April 25, 1911, Barney and Mary were married at St Mary’s in West Point. They had a farm near West Point. Barney and Mary Lohman had their first child almost a year later and went on to have four more. Unfortunately, Mary died shortly after the birth of their fourth child on September 23, 1918. Barney was left with four small children, including a 15 day old baby girl. The baby was taken in by Barney’s sister Eda and her husband Aloysious Harmeyer. They raised the child to adulthood. I wrote about Al in this post.

Sometime after 1920, Barney married Margaret Koepping. They had 5 children together, two of whom died in infancy. Margaret died in 1958. Barney died on June 25, 1965. Barney, Mary and Margaret are buried in Calvary Cemetery.

I did find one transcribed article that had the wedding for Barney and Mary happening on April 23 rather than April 25. This is why it is best to look for certificates rather than transcribed records. It’s easy to have errors in reading or transcribing.

In general, research for this was somewhat tricky as there was another Mary Fullenkamp who was born just a few years later who was a cousin to this Mary Fullenkamp and the two are often confused when searching for records.
