August Lohman and Clara Holtfoester were married on June 26, 1863. They were the grandparents of Herman Lohman who married Walt’s cousin Germaine Wellman.
August Lohman was born May 31, 1831 in Herzfeld, Prussia. I know little about his family. Some records list a father named Bernard. August immigrated to the United Sates in 1857. I haven’t been able to find out what ship he traveled on. August settled near West Point where he was a farmer.

Clara Holtfoester was born June 10, 1843 in Katholisch, Prussia. Her parents were Heinrich and Theresia Laumeier Holtfoester. Theresia died sometime before the family came to the United States. They arrived in New Orleans on November 30, 1855 on the ship Tuisko, sailing from Bremen. Along with her father, Clara was accompanied by and older sister Anna and a younger brother Bernard.
August and Clara married in West Point on June 26, 1863. I was not able to find the record of the marriage. According to the 1900 census records, Clara had 11 children but I only have names for 10. I know that one daughter, Anna, died in infancy.

According to the records, August became a naturalized citizen , but there is no record that Clara did. They continued to live near West Point raising their family and farming. Clara died May 23, 1906. August lived in December 1, 1909. I found his will and it is interesting to read through. Each of his living children received more than $1000 from the estate.
August and Clara Lohman are buried in Calvary Cemetery in West Point. I have written about many of their descendants on the blog. I wrote about their grandson Herman in this post. Their son Barney was the subject of this post.
