I’ve written a fair number of posts on cooking and recipes. I thought you might appreciate a glimpse into how I store my cookbooks and recipes.
I try to do a good job with menu planning so that I know I have all of the ingredients I need to make a dish. Sometimes, you don’t have what you need to cook a recipe. So what do you do? How about a substitution?
I have always liked the flavor of my banana bread recipe, but it was somewhat dense. Also nuts or chocolate chips fell to the bottom of the loaf. So I decided to try to use kitchen chemistry to see if I could fix those issues.
I do a lot of batch cooking and freeze items for later. Sometimes it is nice to do a smaller recipe, especially for desserts. We don’t want to be eating a cake for two weeks! Here’s a quick orange cake treat for two.
Stollen is a traditional German holiday bread with nuts, dried or candied fruit and spices. Most recipes are fairly similar, using flour, water and yeast as a start, then adding various other ingredients. The recipe I use comes from The Better Homes and Garden New Cook Book. The copy I own was published in 1989.
Cooking and baking for the holidays is a tradition for many. Whether it is cookies and candy for Christmas or latkes and kugal for Hanukkah, many cultures enjoy special foods around major holidays. Decorated sugar cookies are always a favorite of ours.
