Herman Pomberg was born in Lee County, Iowa on February 7, 1860. He is the father-in-law of Catherine Wellman, one of Walt’s cousins.

Herman Pomberg was the oldest child born to Heinrich and Mary Mettenberg Pomberg. Heinrich and Mary were both born in Prussia. Heinrich arrived in the United States in 1854 and Mary arrived here in 1859. I don’t know if they were married before they came to the United States. Herman was the oldest child and they had at least 10 all together.

In 1880, we find the family living together on a farm in Marion Township of Lee County, not far from St. Paul.

1880 census

On February 7, 1888, Herman married Mary Mertens in St Paul, Iowa. Mary was the daughter of Christian and Christina Schlanger Mertens. They lived in the St Paul area and had a farm.

Marriage record

Together Herman and Mary had 4 children. In the 1900 census, we see the children, the oldest, Henry, is 11 and the youngest, Catherine, is 4. The 1910 census finds them all still farming. Only Christine, the youngest, is still attending school.

1900 census

Herman Pomberg died on May 22, 1912. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

I wrote about Herman’s daughter-in-law in this post.
