It all started so innocently. A simple conversation with a coworker about music. His son had recently gotten a new electric guitar. I mentioned that Walt had been thinking about getting a guitar. The next thing you know, our home is starting to look like a music studio.
The guitar is a Dean Vendetta, a good starter electric guitar. It needed a bit of work so my coworker gave it to us for free. But a free guitar is like a free kitten. We had to learn about amplifiers and pedals. Walt had to learn about adjusting truss rods and choosing string gauges.
We got it fixed up. We purchased an amplifier and a pedal set. Time to play guitar! Walt had an acoustic guitar growing up and has played off and on. He’s also played a fair amount of harmonica. He quickly picked up the basics.
I was struggling with fingering, so we decided to go look at smaller guitars to see if that would be more workable for me. I found I could play better with a parlor or 3/4 size acoustic guitar.
And then we took a right turn at Albuquerque.
While we were at the music store, I started fiddling around with a few digital pianos and keyboards. I had owned a 61 key basic digital keyboard for a few years, but had sold it to friends. To my surprise, I actually remembered a few chords. Now we had to learn about digital pianos versus digital keyboards. We had to learn about pedals and sound options.
After some shopping around and some discussion, we opted to get a digital piano for me and purchased a Williams Allegro IV Digital Piano (this home set).
I’m having a lot of fun re-learning chords and brushing up on my music reading skills. Maybe at some point we will actually be able to play something together ;). I suspect that one of those acoustic guitars will be the next instrument to find it’s way here.
The year of saying yes continues!
