Mary Melissa Cross was born on March 14, 1825 in Clinton County, New York. She is Michelle’s 3rd great-grandmother.
Mary Melissa Cross was born in Clinton County, New York. I know next to nothing about her early life. From the 1880 census, we see that her parents were born in Vermont.
She married Lewis M. Trevett in 1948. Lewis and Mary were farmers near Concord in Erie County, New York. We find them there in the 1850 federal census and the 1860 census. They had two children while living in New York, a daughter Orcelia and a son, Orlando. Orlando is my 2nd great grandfather.

New York to Wisconsin
Sometime in the early 1860’s the family moved to Wisconsin. They had two more children there, a daughter Harriet and a son, Harrison. Their older children were 17 and 14 when their next daughter was born.
The 1880 census has Mary and Lewis still farming. Their older daughter Orcelia is living with them and teaching school. Their two younger children are also in the home. Also listed is an Edward Cook, listed as a servant for relationship and laborer for occupation.

Lewis died in 1899. The 1900 census has Mary and Orcelia living in Cross Plains. It lists Mary as a landlord. Orcelia died in 1904. Mary moved in with her son Harrison and his family. Mary Cross Trevett died on May 27, 1911. She died intestate (no will) and I found the records of the court proceedings. Her daughter Harriet (often called Hattie) was declared incompetent and a lawyer was assigned to represent her. Her son Harrison was the executor. It was interesting to read the papers.
Mary Cross Trevett was buried in Mount Horeb Union Cemetery with her husband Lewis and daughter Orcelia.

I wrote about Orlando in this post.
