Charles McCain and Sarah Hoel (Hole) were married on March 30, 1097 in Celina Ohio. Sarah is Walt’s great aunt.
Those of you who have followed the blog know that I try to post events like anniversaries and birthdays on the day they occurred (at least for the last couple of years). Today’s post is one of those posts where further research moved the date from the date I had.
From Walt’s mother, I had Sarah’s marriage to Charles and a list of children. During a trip to Ohio, Walt I stopped at the Garst Museum in Greenville, Ohio. (Their website is here). They have a lot of resources. Among their files was a compilation of marriage dates. This compilation gave us a marriage date of March 28, 1907. Cool! I had a date.
Now that more information is available on line, I was able to find the record of Charles and Sarah’s wedding as recorded in the county records for Mercer County, Ohio. This record showed a date on March 30, 1907. So now I had a record to show the date.

Charles Hudson McCain was born on April 3, 1883 to Benjamin and Mary Mofford McCain in Mercer County, Ohio. Sarah Jane Hoel (Hole) was born on July 19, 1887 in Darke County, Ohio. Her parents were John and Lydia Finkbohn Hole. I have also seen birthdays of July 29, 1887 and June, 1887 in information about her, but have no confirming paperwork.
Charles and Sarah together
Charles and Sarah McCain set up housekeeping in St. Henry, Ohio, after their marriage. The 1910 census shows Charles is a cream driver for a creamer. They have a 2 year old son, Glen, and son Lloyd was one month old at the time of the census. I wrote a bit about Glen here.
By 1920, Charles and Sarah have a farm in Mercer County. By the end of 1930, they have 9 living children, having lost an infant son in 1929. They continue to farm until they retired. They lived in Washington, still in Mercer County. Sarah died on August 30, 1957. Charles died on December 26, 1963. They are buried in Swamp College Cemetery in Celina, Ohio.
This is not the first time I have written about errors in records. In this post about Sarah’s aunt, Rhoda Hole, I talked about the challenges of similar names in records. If you search the tag Genealogy Research, you will find more posts about names and such that can influence your search.
