Aloysious Henry Winnike was born March 13, 1893. He is the husband of LaVern Link, Walt’s 1st cousin twice removed.
Al was the 3rd child born to Joseph and Anna Lohman Winnike. The family had a farm in Pleasant Ridge Township near West Point, Iowa. By 1920, Al was living in Cedar Rapids. He was living as a roomer in a building owned by a man named Valkanbraer Van. It is pretty clear that this was a larger building as there were nearly 100 people living there. Al was working at a salesman in a clothing store.
Al Winnike married Lavern Link on October 12, 1920 in West Point, Iowa. LaVern was the daughter of Eustace and Mary Link. I wrote about Eustace in this post. By 1925, Al and LaVern were living in Iowa Falls. Their daughter Mary was two years old.
By 1930, the family was in Akron, Ohio, where Al was managing a clothing store. The 1940 census has them living in Davenport, Iowa. I found his World War I and World War II draft registration cards. Based on limited information, he did serve in the military, but I haven’t any further information at this time.

In 1950, Al and LaVern were still living in Davenport. Al continued to work in a clothing store.
Al Winnike died on November 15, 1965 in Davenport.

As a fun fact, Al and LaVern’s daughter Mary married Edward Gray, supposedly the son of Walt’s great aunt Lydia Ellen Hoel Gray Helmer. I wrote about her in this post.
