Hazel Anna Durfee was born February 26, 1917 in Morristown, South Dakota.  Her parents, Aaron Bradford “Bud” and Anna Durfee ran the general store there.  They moved to Reeder, North Dakota in 1921 and had a store there as well.

This photo was probably taken in Wyoming, where Bud’s parents and some of his siblings lived. I’m not sure yet which cousin Sonny was. Ella was Hazel’s aunt.

Hazel attended school in Reeder and then to the University of North Dakota where she earned a teaching degree in 1939.

She told me this story: One year, Hazel and her brother Charles were on the train heading back to Grand Forks after Christmas. It snowed so heavily that the train was forced to stop. The students were parceled out to the homes and church in a small town for a few days until the tracks were clear.

Hazel moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, after graduation. She taught junior high and high school mathematics until 1980.

She married George Kellogg on December 25, 1940.  He died December 6, 1978.

Hazel died on March 26, 2014.
