Dolores Wellman was born on July 18, 1918 in West Point, Iowa. She is Walt’s 1st cousin once removed.

Dolores Wellman was the second child born to Bernard and Theresa Merschmann Wellman. The family farmed near West Point. Dolores went to school at St. Mary’s, and is featured in this post. I also found this picture of Dolores.

This picture is labeled Germaine, Dolores, Robert, Evelyn (Brune), Georgina. I know that Georgie is the 3rd girl, so I’m not completely sure of the order of the others.

On February 14, 1939, Dolores married Cletus Freitag. I wrote about him in this post. I found the record of their marriage. Dolores and Clip had a farm and kept cattle, hogs and sheep. They had one son together. Clip died on November 12, 1955.

Dolores moved into West Point. She worked for a time at Freitag Implement. Later she was the postmaster for West Point, a position she held for 20 years. We always enjoyed visiting with Dolores. She had some wonderful stories to tell. She makes an appearance in one of Georgie’s stories in this post.

Dolores Wellman Freitag died on August 12, 2022. She and Clip are buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Houghton, Iowa.
