Every year, the first flowers of spring brighten up my days. It’s fun to watch things grow and flowers open. Here’s a glance at spring at our house over the last few weeks.

Earliest of all are the crocus. We have several colors of crocus, but my favorite is this little white one with purple. They have somehow spread from where they were planted originally to a bunch of places in the yard. I suspect the squirrels may have had something to do with that. There are hyacinths and tulips coming up in this area as well.

Next are the daffodils. We have a variety of yellow and white daffodils, and they open at various times. These yellow ones by the house are ready to be divided.

These are finished now, but we have some others in various parts of the yard. The hyacinth are the next to bloom, but I didn’t get any pictures of them this year.

Spring at our house

Now we have a lot of flowers blooming. The tulips are coming up all over the place. Usually, the deer and rabbits get a fair number of them, but we still have a bunch this year. You can see the tail end of some of the hyacinth.

The quince is blooming as well. This always makes my thing of my mother-in-law, Georgie. She had a large quince bush near her back door.

The lilac is just opening. I purchased what I thought was a dwarf lilac with dark purple flowers. I got a full size lilac with purple flowers with white edges. It’s beautiful, but much larger than I expected. You can see a red bud tree blooming in the background.

There is a shoot that came up from below the graft, so I have one white branch on the bush. It makes for an interesting contrast.

The crab apple tree is also in full bloom right now. We rarely get much in the way of apples from it – the deer and squirrels eat them – but I love the way it looks in the spring.

We always have birds nesting around us. This year we have a robin that built her nest near our back door. We considered removing the nest because we knew it would be stressful for her to have us using the door all the time, but there were already eggs when we went to check it. We also have a dove who build a nest on our ladder where it hangs on the back of the garage. She also has eggs in her nest.

This spring was extra special because of the eclipse. We had friends in from out of town visiting and spent an enjoyable time watching from our back yard. I didn’t get any good pictures of the sun, but we did get a cool shot taken with a colander.

We got to enjoy the reactions of the animals. The hawks were screeching like crazy. The bats came out and flew around for a while. The plants also reacted, with flowers closing up. Hopefully those of you in the United States got to enjoy the eclipse where ever you were.

I hope you enjoyed a glimpse of spring at my house. We covered spring in the woods in this post.
