The 4th of July is a big holiday in the United States. It is celebrated by picnics, family gatherings, parades, festivals, and fireworks. I thought it might be a nice time for some reflection on some of the past celebrations.
When I was a kid, most of our 4th of Julys were spent in South Dakota with my mom’s family. My Grandma James’ birthday was on the fourth, so we celebrated with family and watched the fireworks either at the local park or with my aunt and uncle at their house on Lake Kampeska. You can read more about her in this post.
Sometimes it would be chilly on the 4th of July, so we would borrow jackets from the cousins. At my sister’s wedding near the 4th one year, it was a cold rainy weekend so we had to borrow coats and umbrellas both for the wedding and for the fireworks.
At the Lake
Another favorite set of memories for Walt and I are the times we have been out camping near Lake Monroe here in Indiana. We found a place where we could sit out on a rocky area overlooking the lake and see several sets of fireworks going off, some private displays and some from various communities.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July!

Hope you too have a wonderful Fourth of July! We are on the way to Watertown to celebrate with the Brage’s.
