Walt’s great grandfather John Swisher Hole was born on November 4, 1840 in Darke County Ohio. His parents were James Anderson and Mary Ann Swisher Hole.

I’ve talked some about him in this post about his marriage to Lydia Margaret Finkbohn (sometimes spelled Finkbone).

John Swisher Hoel and his family.

John served in the 40th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded at Lookout Mountain. His brother Henry was also in the same company. I’ve told some of his story here.

In June of 2021, Walt and I spent some time at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. At the time, we didn’t know much about John’s unit and where they had served. We went to Lookout Mountain and looked around some, then went to Chickamauga Battlefield. There the rangers were incredible and were able to point us in the direction of where the 40th Ohio fought.

This monument shows where the unit fought.

It was incredible to be able to walk where they did. We will share more about what we learned in a later post. We hope to go back soon so we can see where he fought on Lookout Mountain since we know more about that now.

John lived in Ohio until his death on March 26, 1911.

This picture was taken near the end of John’s life around 1908.
