George Aloysius (Al) Link was born on August 23, 1863 in New Vienna, Iowa. Al is Walt’s 2nd Great Uncle. His brother Isadore is Walt’s Great Grandfather.

Al Link was born to William J. and Mary Ann Sauter Link in New Vienna, Dubuque County, Iowa. The 1870 census shows the family was farming in Colony, Delaware County, Iowa. It lists Earlville as the post office. In 1876, the Family moved to the West Point area. The 1880 census shows him working on the family farm in West Point Township.

On February 12, 1892, Al Link married Emma Whitlock. They had seven children, with five surviving into adulthood.

George Aloysius Link worked for many years managing the lumber yard in West Point. He did road work and helped build several bridges in the area. He also served in civic roles in West Point, serving as mayor and town assessor.

Al Link died on February 1, 1919. Father Grothe officiated at the funeral and Al was buried in Calvary Cemetery. Emma lived until 1932. I found his obituary. I note that it gives the date of August 24 for his birthday, but is the only place I have seen it listed on that date.

I talk about Al’s father William in this post.
