Last week, I talked about Erasmus and Maria Straub. His brother was Markus Straub, Walt’s 4th great-grandfather. Today, we are celebrating the anniversary of his daughter Ann Straub’s marriage to Andreas Sauter (Sauters). These are Walt’s 3rd great-grandparents.

Andreas was born November 12, 1810, in Bieringen, Hohenlohekreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany to Felix and Maria Anna Fischer Sauter. I’m not sure exactly when he came to America, but by 1932 he was living in Columbiana County, Ohio.

Ann Straub was born to Markus and Margaretha Trufner Straub on February 6th, 1807 in Bieringen, Hohenlohekreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is very likely that the families knew each other. Markus and his family left for America on June 13, 1832.

Andreas and Ann were married in Ohio on December 12, 1832. I found them in the 1850 and 1860 census living in Bearfield, Ohio.

Here you see Andreas and Ann and their family. Mary A, their 15 year old daughter is Walt’s 2nd great-grandmother.

In the 1860 census, three of the children have moved out. The oldest daughter living at home is listed as working as a domestic servant. Andreas is still a farmer.

The 1860 census.

Andreas and Ann had 9 children. They lived in Ohio until their deaths, Andreas on July 30, 1870 and and Ann on April 2, 1880.

It is interesting to note that the name on the headstones is Sauters. I have seen Sauter, Sauters, Souder and Souders on various paperwork for the family. This is an excellent example of variations of names as I discussed in this post. The family papers we have have both Sauter and Sauters, so that is what I use.
