Happy Gotcha Day, Jaxon! When a pet joins the family!

The day your furry friend comes into your life is often called gotcha day. Jaxon came into our life 8 years ago today. He was a scared rescue dog, afraid of any sort of stick, broom, or newspaper. It was clear Jaxon had not been treated the best. He had been given up for destructive behavior. We were happy to adopt him.

Jaxon when we first brought him home. He was about 9 months old. and we quickly discovered he thought he was a lap dog, and loved to cuddle.

It’s Mustachio Azul!

It took some work, but we taught him to walk on a leash, fetch, and go hiking with us. He would throw his toys about and we decided to make him some soft things that he could shake without worrying about bruised legs or broken items. I braided together some scraps of fleece and he quickly decided these were great toys. He carried two of them in his mouth like a fancy mustache.

Camping and hiking

We discovered that he loved hiking, but was never to sure about spending the night in the woods.

His favorite place when in camp is hanging out in the tent or close to us. He has a backpack and carries his own food and treats. The vest is a down vest we found on clearance. I added some darts for a good fit. His front legs go in the armholes and it zips up his back.

He likes to hang outside best of all. Stalking squirrels and laying in the sun are fun activities. You can read more about his coats that I made him here. I wrote about his leash system in this post.

He has a spotted coat and it serves a very good camouflage in snowy weather. Even his toenails are multi-colored.

Pup Challenges

It hasn’t always been easy. Taking him out in snow storms (that’s Michelle looking like a ninja), dealing with two knee surgeries and him not being able to go up and down stairs.

He loves to hang out with his peeps, even if we don’t necessarily need his help – such as trying to do yoga! He is also still a lap dog.

We are so glad to have Jaxon in our lives. Even if he is a goofy dog at times. He lays in the oddest positions and has an addiction to chews. It looks like he was on a “bone” bender in this second picture.

So happy gotcha day for our pup Jaxon!

Even today – all smiles to be outside with his family!
