Why I love backpacking Part 7: Fungus

One of the more varied things you can see while hiking in the woods is fungus. If you are going mushroom hunting – be sure to consult with an expert before eating any you find!

Some are very large. The shoe you see in this picture is Walt’s size 13!

Some are tiny. This one is next to my hiking stick – a little less than an inch in diameter.

Colors – oh my the colors! Everything from grey to yellow to red.

And shapes. There are cups, ruffles and some that look like masses of tendrils.

You often find them growing on trees and logs.

Some look almost feathery and others have spots.

Some look positively alien.

Some are enjoyed by the creatures in the woods.

And we can’t forget the king of all mushrooms – the morel!

I won’t tell where we found these!
