John Christopher Meierotto and Anna Maria Hutchons were married on September 18, 1856 in Lee County, Iowa. Their granddaughter married Walt’s 1st cousin twice removed, Herman Brockman. This connection is through the Kempker side of the family.

John Christopher Meierotto was born on November 6, 1828 to Johann and Marie Antfanger Meierotto in Germany. He immigrated to this country around 1840. Some items show 1838, others 1840, but I haven’t found an immigration record.

Anna Maria Hutchons was born on September 2, 1839 to Christian an Ann Bremhorst Hutchons in Iowa. Her parents were German immigrants and along with John’s family, some of the early settlers in Lee County Iowa.

Marriage

Christopher, as he was know as was a farmer near St Paul. On September 18. 1856, Christopher married Maria. They had 11 children together, 9 sons and two daughters. In the 1860 census, Christopher and Mary are living with his parents and their first two children.

I also found the family in the 1880 census and the 1990 census. There were also a number of records I found for the children.

I did find Christopher listed in the Civil War draft records for the First Congressional District of Iowa. I will have to browse it to see what other names I recognize. The record is somewhat alphabetized in that all of the letter “M” for each county are grouped together, but the names within the county are simply listed.

This is for Des Moines, Lee, Van Buren, Henry, Davis, Jefferson, Washington and Louisa counties.

Maria, sometimes listed as Mary or Marie, died on March 10, 1884 in St Paul.

On July 20, 1887, Christopher married Gertrude Nuenkemper Bueker, a widow with 10 children of her own. Christopher died September 8, 1907. Christopher and Maria Meierotto are buried in St James Cemetery in St Paul, Iowa. Gertrude and several of the children are also buried there.

When I was working on this post, I had another Hutchons in the family, so went looking to see if they were related. Indeed they were. The mother of the wife in this post is the sister of Maria. Catherine’s great granddaughter married Ben Brune, connected through the Wellmans. I found another post where one of Catherine’s daughters married into the Link side of the family.
