Catherine Pomberg Hellman was born on May 8, 1874 in St. Paul, Iowa. She is related on the Wellman side of the family.
Catherine was the 8th child born to Heinrich and Mary Mettenberg Pomberg. They lived near St Paul, where they were farmers. I found Catherine listed by many spelling variations in the census records, including Katie, Kate, Katherine and Catharina.
On February 7, 1899, Catherine married Henry Hellman in St. Paul. Henry was a butcher in Fort Madison. F.W. Hoffman was the pastor. Witnesses were George Hellman and Mary Pomberg. I found a few records where they were listed as Hillman, not Hellman.
The 1900 census has them living in a rented home at 1515 Third Street. They had a daughter, Marie, who was born in April of 1900 and was just 2 months old at the time of the census. I wasn’t able to find anything more about Marie, but she died young.
At some point, they moved out of Fort Madison and lived near Donnellson. Catherine Pomberg Hellman died on January 28, 1928 of heart failure. Henry lived until Dec 4, 1937. They are both buried in Calvary Cemetery in West Point, Iowa.

Catherine’s nephew, Henry, married Walt’s cousin Catherine Wellman. I wrote about them in this post.
