Edna Helmer Hoel was born on December 5, 1907. She is related to Walt twice, once as a first cousin 1x removed and once as the wife of his uncle.

Edna Helmer was born to Charles and Lydia Ellen Hoel Helmer. She was the third child born to the family. The family were farmers.

Family reports have Edna born in Ohio shortly before the family moved to Michigan. I have come across some reports that list her place of birth as Michigan, including some census records. I haven’t found a birth certificate, so I don’t know for sure. Edna only had a 5th grade education.

According to transcriptions, Edna Helmer married Charles Aaron Hoel (Hole) on May 1, 1925 in Monmouth, Illinois. I have not seen an actual record, so I am not sure of the exact date. Charles in the son of William and Martha Fisher Hoel and Lydia’s nephew.

Charles went by Aaron (which I talked about in this post). Aaron and Edna lived in Michigan near Cadillac. Aaron held a number of labor jobs, and in the 1930 census he was listed as Laborer, Odd Jobs. By that 1930 census, they had 2 girls, the youngest being just 11 months. They had three daughters altogether. 1940 found Aaron working on a school project and by 1950 he and his eldest daughter were working for Goodyear.

Edna and Carol, late 1930s

As far as I know, Edna never held a job. Aaron died on April 17, 1961. Edna Helmer Hoel died on March 24, 1987 in Cadillac, Michigan. I corresponded regularly with her daughter Vera for many years.

I wrote about Edna’s parents in these posts, Charles and Lydia.
