Richard Mendenhall was born on November 14, 1794 in North Carolina. He is Walt’s 3rd great-grandfather.

Richard was born to Joseph and Deidamia Hill Mendenhall in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was their oldest child. I know they had several more children but I’m not sure how many. Sometime shortly after his birth, the family moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee. Later, they moved to Miami County, Ohio.

On August 14, 1817, Richard Mendenhall married Sarah Pearson. Sarah and Richard had 9 children, including their daughter Rachel, Walt’s great, great grandmother. I found the registration of their wedding. There were married by William Mendenhall, JP.

I wrote about Sarah in this post. They were farmers. I haven’t found out much else about their lives. I may have to look for some more information. Since Richard and Sarah were Quakers, I may be able to find more in the records.

Richard Mendenhall died on April 25, 1871. When we were in Ohio several years ago, we visited the cemetery where he was buried and took this picture of his headstone.
