Sarah Pearson was born on June 2, 1795 near the Bush River Settlement in South Carolina. Her parents were Abel and Anne McClure Pearson. Sarah is Walt’s great, great, great grandmother.

Sarah and her parents were Quakers, and so we have records of when they moved to Ohio in 1814. The record show her mother, Anne and several siblings being found of good character and able to be admitted to the local Quaker meeting at Newgarden Meeting. It is from the Redstone Meeting and is dated July 1, 1814.

Sarah married another Quaker, Richard Mendenhall on August 14, 1817 in Miami County, Ohio. Sarah and Richard had 9 children, including their daughter Rachel, Walt’s great, great grandmother. I found the registration of their wedding. There were married by William Mendenhall, JP.

The 1850 census shows Sarah and Richard living on their farm with 3 children, Aaron, Sarah, and Elizabeth in Patterson Township, Darke County, Ohio.

In 1860, they are still living on the farm, but appear to have a couple boarders in this census. The census does not list relationships. Looking at the pages around this one, I found several of their children living nearby.

Sarah died on April 6, 1866 in Yorkshire, Ohio. She is buried in the Mendenhall Cemetery.

Walt and I traveled to western Ohio several years ago and visited this area. We took this picture of her gravestone when we were there.

You can find more about the line of family that leads to Walt in this post about Sarah’s granddaughter Lydia and her husband John here.
