We’re Back! And Yes, We Did Some Fishing!

We had a good month off and are back on the blog again. And we did do some fishing. We spent a few days out in the Black Hills of South Dakota with a day trip into Wyoming.

Mitchell Lake – just a short way down the road from the cabin we stayed in!

My parents joined us for the trip, and we stayed in some cabins near Hill City. Mitchell Lake was very close, and we made several trips to fish there over our time in the Hills. The first night we went down and did some fishing after dinner.

A couple of rainbow trout! The big one is about 14 inches long.

On our second day, we drove over into Wyoming. We did a bit of family research on the Durfees while we were in the area, and found a bit of information about where they had a ranch. You can find out a little about that in this post. Look for more in a future family history post. We also went to Devil’s Tower and hiked a bit.

More fishing!

Another day we went fishing at Horsethief Lake, not far from Mount Rushmore. We only caught a few yellow perch and bluegill there, but it was beautiful.

A view over Horsethief Lake. The foot bridge in the background leads to a campground where we have stayed in the past.

Another day we drove up Spearfish Canyon, an absolutely gorgeous area. We did a little fishing along the way. A stop at Roughlock Falls, just off of Spearfish Canyon, allowed us to do a little stream fishing.

We did catch some more fish at Mitchell Lake. We did a fair amount of fishing there since it was so close to where we were staying.

Three rainbow trout lay on a white table. the largest is about 14 inches long.
More trout! We got 3 meals out of our catch on this trip!

On our was back to Sioux Falls we went via the Badlands Loop Road. It’s a great drive anytime, but this one was amazing as we there was a thunderstorm. We could see the storm moving in and watched the lightning strikes from the safety of our car. Despite the storm, we still got some good pictures. The colors aren’t as vibrant as in full sun, but still amazing.

We spent several days visiting a bunch of family and headed home.
